In an ideal world, where everything is affordable, the plat form I think we would all go for, is the 6 DOF - used on Level D simulators all over the world. Perhaps, 3 DOF is more affordable, however - if push comes to shove with the budgie (budget), then a simple more affordable option might be the below image, for a solid, robust platform to build the shell on top of, and can later be installed on the motion platform.
